The ligaments of the shoulder joint[1]

Name

  • Coracohumeral Ligament (CHL)
  • Ligamentum Coracohumerale

General

  • Strong intrinsic ligament supporting the glenohumeral joint complex
  • Origin: base of the coracoid process of the scapula
  • Runs latearlly across the glenohumeral joint capsule
  • Creates a tunnel for the long head of biceps brachii
  • Insertion: greater and lesser tubercles of the humerus, along transverse ligament of the bicipital groove

Functions

  • Strengthens glenohumeral joint superiorly
  • Limits excessive external rotation
  • Limits inferior translation of humerus

Variant Anatomy

  • Rarely hypoplastic or aplastic (5%)[2]
